If you've browsed our booking calendar, you've probably noticed we highlight three specific dates each Hijri month. These aren't arbitrary — they come directly from an authentic narration, and understanding them can help you plan your Hijama sessions with more intention.
The Narration
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger ﷺ, peace be upon him, said:
“If anyone has himself cupped on the 17th, 19th, and 21st, it will be a remedy for every disease.”
— Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), from the Prophet ﷺThese numbers refer to days of the Hijri (Islamic lunar) month — not the Gregorian calendar most of us use day to day. That distinction matters, because it means the "Sunnah dates" fall on a different Gregorian date every single month, shifting along with the lunar cycle.
Why the Lunar Calendar?
The Hijri calendar is purely lunar, meaning each month begins with the sighting (or calculation) of the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. The 17th, 19th, and 21st fall in the days surrounding the full moon — a detail many scholars and practitioners have noted as significant, given the moon's well-documented gravitational influence on fluids, including tidal patterns in bodies of water.
While the primary basis for observing these dates is the Hadith itself rather than a scientific explanation, many practitioners and clients alike find it meaningful that the recommended timing aligns with a period of heightened lunar influence — a small but interesting point of harmony between Prophetic guidance and the natural world.
Do You Have to Book on These Exact Dates?
No — and this is an important point of clarity. Hijama performed on any day still carries its full benefit and remains an act of following the Sunnah. Scholarly opinion generally holds that the 17th, 19th, and 21st are recommended (mustahabb), not obligatory. If your schedule doesn't align with these dates in a given month, there's no reason to delay treatment you need.
That said, if your schedule is flexible, many of our clients choose to plan around these dates specifically to follow the narration as closely as possible — particularly for their first session or for sessions tied to a specific spiritual intention.
Finding the Dates Each Month
Because the Hijri calendar shifts relative to the Gregorian calendar, manually tracking these dates can be tedious. Our Sunnah Hijama Days calendar calculates the current Hijri month automatically and shows you exactly which Gregorian dates correspond to the 17th, 19th, and 21st — with a direct link to book.
Planning a Treatment Series Around the Sunnah Dates
For chronic or long-standing conditions, a single session is rarely enough to see lasting change. Many clients build a treatment plan around consecutive Hijri months, booking on the recommended dates where their schedule allows. If you're dealing with a persistent issue, our guide on Hijama for chronic back pain gives a sense of how we structure a longer-term treatment approach.
