What is Ruqyah? Islamic Spiritual Healing Explained

Ruqyah · May 2026

Ruqyah is one of the oldest, most directly-evidenced forms of healing in Islamic tradition — yet it's often misunderstood, sometimes confused with folk superstition it has nothing to do with. This article explains what Ruqyah actually is, its foundation in the Quran and Sunnah, and what a genuine session looks like. You can also read about our approach to Ruqyah directly.

The Meaning of Ruqyah

Ruqyah al-Shariyyah (لرُّقْيَة الشَّرْعِيَّة) refers to Islamic spiritual healing performed through the recitation of the Quran, authentic supplications (du'a), and the Names and Attributes of Allah ﷻ. Unlike practices that draw on superstition, charms, or anything outside of Allah ﷻ's words, lawful Ruqyah relies exclusively on the Quran and authentic Sunnah — nothing more, nothing less.

“And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.”

— Surah Al-Isra, 17:82

This ayah is one of several places in the Quran where healing (shifa) is explicitly attributed to the Quran itself — not as a metaphor, but as a real, tangible source of both spiritual and physical healing for those who believe.

The Prophet ﷺ Practiced It Himself

Ruqyah isn't a later addition to Islamic practice — the Prophet ﷺ performed it on his own companions and taught specific supplications for the purpose. Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, and the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) form the core of nearly every authentic Ruqyah session, precisely because of their established role in the Sunnah for this purpose.

The Messenger ﷺ, peace be upon him, said:

“The best of remedies is al-Quran.”

— Ibn Majah, Hadith 3501

What Ruqyah Addresses

Ruqyah is sought most often for conditions that are spiritual or psychosomatic in nature — the kind that don't always respond to conventional treatment alone. This includes:

It's worth being clear: Ruqyah is not a replacement for medical treatment, and a responsible practitioner will never present it as one. Many people pursue Ruqyah and conventional medical care in parallel, particularly when symptoms don't have a clear physical cause.

What a Session Actually Involves

A genuine Ruqyah session is calm, respectful, and follows Islamic boundaries throughout. It typically involves:

  1. A confidential consultation to understand your situation and concerns — nothing is too small or embarrassing to mention.
  2. Tahara and intention — you're guided to be in a state of wudu where possible, and the session opens with the intention for healing through Allah ﷻ's words.
  3. Quranic recitation — specific surahs and ayat are recited by the Rakee, directly or through audio, alongside relevant du'as.
  4. Ruqyah water and oil — where appropriate, recited water and black seed oil are provided for continued use at home.
  5. Aftercare guidance — a personalised plan of adhkar and practices to continue your healing beyond the session.

Healing through Ruqyah is often a process, not a single event — follow-up sessions are common and normal, not a sign that "it isn't working."
